Nadim Mehanna and his MotorShow team took the Ford Mustang Dark Horse for a comprehensive drive in the UAE.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse represents the most track-focused, naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 in the Mustang lineup. It was engineered to bridge the gap between everyday usability and dedicated circuit performance, introducing extensive mechanical upgrades, improved cooling, and distinctive aerodynamic refinements that define it as the performance flagship among non-Shelby models.

At its heart lies a reworked 5.0-litre “Coyote” V8 delivering 500 horsepower and around 567 Nm of torque. This engine features forged internals and dual-throttle bodies derived from Ford’s higher-performance divisions, designed to sustain heavy loads during extended
high-speed driving. It can be paired with a 6-speed Tremec manual transmission featuring rev-matching or an optional 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

Together, these configurations provide both the analogue engagement purists appreciate and the rapid-shifting convenience suited for modern performance driving. The chassis has been extensively re-engineered to support track use. It incorporates MagneRide adaptive dampers, reinforced anti-roll bars, and upgraded shocks to deliver stability under cornering and braking.

Cooling has been a major area of focus, with additional engine oil, transmission, and rear-axle coolers ensuring sustained performance during long sessions on track. Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers and large ventilated rotors work alongside Pirelli P Zero tyres on staggered wheels to maximise stopping power and grip.

Externally, the Dark Horse distinguishes itself through functional aerodynamic enhancements. A fixed race-inspired rear wing increases downforce, while the aggressive front fascia and lower side skirts improve airflow and cooling efficiency. Quad darkened exhaust tips, unique wheel designs, and exclusive finishes such as Blue Ember Metallic give the car a distinctive identity within the Mustang family.

Every design cue reinforces its purpose-built nature while maintaining the unmistakable silhouette of the Mustang. Inside, the cabin combines performance focus with modern digital sophistication. The driver is greeted by a fully digital instrument cluster, complemented by a large infotainment display that integrates driving modes and telemetry.

Details such as Indigo Blue stitching, unique trim materials, and dedicated drive-mode selectors give the interior its own personality. The car offers configurable dynamics, adjusting throttle response, suspension stiffness, and steering feedback to suit both road comfort and circuit precision.

The Dark Horse is offered in two main variants — the standard model and the Premium version, which adds extra convenience and comfort features. Pricing varies by market, but the model sits above the Mustang GT due to its mechanical enhancements and exclusive equipment. Ford Performance has also developed the Dark Horse R, a track-only variant designed for motorsport use, featuring stripped interiors, race suspension, and reinforced chassis components.

Within the Mustang hierarchy, the Dark Horse stands as the highest-performing non-Shelby model. Compared to the GT, it offers superior handling, cooling, and braking, while maintaining a naturally aspirated engine that delivers a more traditional driving character. It appeals strongly to enthusiasts who value a manual gearbox and the emotional connection of a high-revving V8, offering a balance between track readiness and day-to-day drivability.

Early impressions highlight a car that feels more precise and composed than previous GT variants. The steering is sharper, body control tighter, and power delivery smoother across the rev range. The sound of the naturally aspirated V8 remains central to the experience, delivering an engaging and authentic performance feel.

Although some critics mention that interior materials could be more refined for the price segment, the car’s dynamics, sound, and driver engagement more than compensate.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse stands as a testament to Ford’s continued commitment to performance in an increasingly electrified world. With its naturally aspirated V8, race-inspired engineering, and distinctive design, it represents a blend of heritage and modernity, a car built for those who seek pure connection between driver, machine, and road.
